These Are The Most In-Demand Job Skills In South Africa Right Now

Jobs portal CareerJunction has published its latest jobs index, highlighting the current state of the job market in the country right now.

The CareerJunction Index (CJI) rose to 108 index points during June 2021 due to a drop in job search activity, down 7%. “As a result, job seekers are experiencing less competition in the current job market,” it said.

The CJI represents online labour dynamics in the country by providing a detailed analysis of the relative ratio of supply and demand in the online job market.

It is based on the analysis of data gathered from the CareerJunction website – where around 3,000 of the country’s top recruiters advertise their positions to millions of registered job seekers.

The latest research shows that the following occupational fields are currently the most sought-after skill sets in the job market:

  • Software development: Software developers and programmers remain highly demanded in the South African job market. Demand for software development skills increased by 23% from the first to the second quarter of 2021.
  • Middle management: Job seekers with managerial skills are facing good employment prospects. Finance managers, as well as sales managers, are high in demand.
  • Representative or sales consulting: Year-on-year demand for sales consultants increased by over 50% indicating improved employment opportunities since last year.

Supply and demand

An overview of vacancy levels across various sectors provides a good indication of where the majority of employment takes place.

According to CareerJunction, the IT, business & management, and finance sectors are the most sought-after sectors, followed by the sales, admin, office & support, and architecture & engineering sectors, among others listed.

“When looking at active job seekers across various sectors, areas of high supply correlate closely to areas of high demand, however supply outstrips demand in some areas, leading to a competitive
environment for job seekers,” the group said.

Here, the admin, office & support sector is quite competitive, as is the business & management sector, it said.

Top employment sectors

The following sectors are showing an increased hiring trend, pointing to better prospects for job seekers:

  • Admin, office and support
  • Business and management
  • Finance
  • Sales
  • ICT
  • Warehousing and logistics

“Since January recruitment activity has increased notably in the admin, office & support, business & management, finance, sales, ICT and warehousing & logistics sectors,” CareerJunction said. said.

“Particularly, ICT vacancies increased significantly during the first six months of 2021. Recruitment activity for ICT professionals grew by 23% from quarter one to quarter two 2021.”

The remaining sectors – namely manufacturing and assembly, marketing, medical and health, and building and construction – have shown fluctuating or volatile hiring trends, meaning job seekers may find it difficult to find work in these fields.

A notable decline in recruitment activity during the second quarter of 2021 is evident for professionals in the medical & health, marketing and manufacturing & assembly sectors, CareerJunction said.
